Q: Only when reading a Details interview did I discover you wrote the script for Stoker. What was it like moving from actor to screenwriter?
If you'd told me years ago that one day I'd be writing screenplays, I don't think I would've believed you. But once I got started, it didn't take long to find my footing. There were certain things I just automatically knew how to do, like as far as the actual process of putting a script and a story together, thanks to the years I spent studying scripts as an actor.
Q: What is the process of writing like for you?
If it's a story originating with me, I usually have to wait until I feel it burning under my skin. Then I'll sit down to write, let things unfold at their own pace. If it's something I've been hired to write I have to take a more disciplined approach. Obviously. Because there's a deadline to meet.
Q: I really enjoyed the film and was intrigued by the intensity and dark undercurrent of the storyline. What inspired the story?
What I wrote and what made it to the screen are two different things. So I can only speak to my original draft. The inspiration was "The Stepfather" with Terry O'Quinn and Alfred Hitchcock's "Shadow Of A Doubt." Spliced together with some vampire mythology. I remember being really intrigued by the idea of these two very unique individuals -"India" and "Uncle Charlie" - out of sync with the world around them, then finding each other. And for this brief moment, feeling like maybe they weren't totally alone.
Q: Is it an indication of a dark and intense side of you?
It's probably safe to say there's a part of me in every character I've ever played and everything I've ever written. Dialed up or down several notches as required. For me the creative process has to be personal. Or personalized. I don't know any other way to go about it. I'm impressed by actors who try to "disappear" into a role, but I'm moved by actors who make me feel like they're revealing something about themselves, like who they are as people, onscreen and onstage. Who make themselves vulnerable. Because they're also making themselves relatable. I think that's a deep part of what we're responding to as an audience when we watch actors perform.
Q: Your next screenplay The Disappointments Room is in pre-production now. Can you tell us a little bit about it?
It's a ghost story inspired by actual events. I've always liked that kind of thing, where there's elements of the fantastic or the supernatural but it's played very real. Or set in the real world. I'm drawn to the things we don't know, to what we can't see. Or prove.
Q: You've talked about how you have struggled with depression. Does writing provide an outlet or a way of dealing with it?
I think writing can definitely help process an experience or maybe reveal something to you that was hidden before. That's probably why so many people keep journals. But if I was going through a tough time I wouldn't just write about it. I'd reach out for help.
Q: The Loft and The Flash both come out this year. Can you tell us a bit about the film and the TV series? A bit about the roles you play?
"The Loft" is a thriller about five friends who run into trouble when they start stepping out on their wives. I play one of the five and I've got secrets of my own. "The Flash" is based on the comic book and I play "Captain Cold," one of the bad guys. Which I'm really enjoying. I played a good guy on "Prison Break" for 81 episodes, so I'm excited when I get a chance to do something different. Color outside the lines a little bit.
Q: You have been quite quiet on the acting front since Prison Break. Why is that?
For a while in there it was all about writing screenplays. That had all my attention. And I liked it that way. But now I'm looking to do both. There's a lot of waiting around on set, so the possibility of working on a script back in my trailer between takes is appealing.
Q: Prison Break was huge in Malaysia. What was it like being part of a series that had such worldwide appeal?
I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed being part of something that reached a wide audience. And when we were working on the show I think we were all very mindful - and grateful - that we had this significant international fanbase. It helped keep us inspired.
Q: What did it feel like when the series ended?
Personally I was OK with it. I was ready to say goodbye. I feel like we were able to tell the story the way it deserved to be told and we got to wrap things up in a way that was satisfying. TV shows get canceled in the middle of the story all the time, and the fans get left hanging. No one will have to wonder what became of Michael and Lincoln.
Q: You have some pretty memorable appearances. One of which was in Mariah Carey's We Belong Together video and in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. What enters your mind when you see these now?
I haven't seen either one in years. That was a long time ago. You know to be honest, these days I don't dwell too much on the past. Or the future. The present is much more interesting. I'm grateful for the jobs I've had, but I don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about them. Recently this guy came up to me and he was a big fan of "Prison Break" and he had all these questions about some plot point in Season Two. And I only had like, a vague recollection of what he was talking about. For him it was totally fresh because he'd just watched the show on DVD or whatever. But for me it was like, "We shot that stuff eight years ago." I don't even remember my character's middle name. Or if he had one.
Q: You came out as an act of protest against the Russian government. Do you see yourself becoming an activist for the community?
I came out to help call attention to what was happening to the gay community in Russia, but I also came out because I was ready. "In my own time. In my own way." That's one of my personal mottos. We should all have the freedom to move and grow and develop at our own pace. It just so happens that when the invitation came to go to Russia, I was in a place in my life where I was ready to make a public statement. The timing was right.

D: Solo dopo la lettura dell'intervista di Details ho scoperto che ha scritto la sceneggiatura di Stoker. Com'è stato passare da attore a sceneggiatore?
Se mi avessi detto anni fa che un giorno avrei scritto sceneggiature, non credo che lo avrei mai creduto. Ma una volta che ho iniziato, non ci è voluto molto per trovare il passo giusto. C'erano alcune cose che sapevo automaticamente come fare, come ad esempio l'effettivo processo di trasformare una storia in sceneggiatura, grazie agli anni che ho trascorso a studiare gli script come attore.
D: Qual è il processo di scrittura per te?
Se si tratta di una storia originale, di solito devo aspettare fino a quando sento che brucia sotto la mia pelle. Poi mi siedo a scrivere, e lascio che le cose si svolgano con il loro ritmo. Se si tratta di qualcosa che mi è stato commissionato, per scrivere devo impormi un approccio più disciplinato. Ovviamente. Perché c'è una scadenza da rispettare.
D: Mi è piaciuto molto il film mi ha incuriosito l'intensità e il sottofondo oscuro della trama. Cosa ha ispirato la storia?
Quello che ho scritto e ciò che si è visto sullo schermo sono due cose diverse. Quindi posso solo parlare del mio progetto iniziale. Ho tratto ispirazione da “The Stepfather” (Il Patrigno) del 1987 con Terry O'Quinn e “Shadow Of A Doubt” (L'ombra del dubbio) di Alfred Hitchcock a cui ho aggiunto un po' di mitologia dei vampiri. Mi ricordo di essere stato molto intrigato dall'idea di questi due individui molto particolari - "India" e "Zio Charlie" - fuori sincronia con il mondo che li circonda, fino a quando ognuno trova l'altro. E per un breve momento, sentono che forse non sono completamente soli.
D: È la rappresentazione del lato intenso e oscuro che c'è in te?
È quasi sicuro dire che probabilmente c'è una parte di me in ogni personaggio che abbia mai interpretato e in tutto ciò che abbia mai scritto. Ho sempre attinto ai vari livelli della mia personalità, secondo quello che mi veniva richiesto in quel momento. Per me il processo creativo deve essere personale. O personalizzato. Non conosco nessun altro modo per fare le cose. Sono impressionato da attori che cercano di "sparire" in un ruolo, ma mi sento più vicino a quegli attori che mi fanno sentire che stanno rivelando qualcosa su se stessi, quello che sono come persone, sullo schermo e sul palco. Chi sa rendersi vulnerabile. Perché ci si può facilmente riconoscere. Penso che sia una parte profonda di quello che percepiamo come pubblico quando guardiamo esibirsi gli attori.
D: La tua sceneggiatura originale “The Disappointments Room” è in pre-produzione. Puoi dirci qualcosa su questo nuovo film?
È una storia di fantasmi ispirata a fatti realmente accaduti. Mi è sempre piaciuto questo genere di storie, dove ci sono gli elementi del fantastico e del soprannaturale ma racconta fatti molto reali. Oppure, ambientate nel mondo reale. Sono attratto da cose che non conosciamo, da ciò che non possiamo vedere. O dimostrare.
D: Hai parlato di come hai lottato contro la depressione. Pensi che scrivere fornisca uno sbocco o un modo per affrontare il problema?
Credo che la scrittura può sicuramente aiutare a elaborare un'esperienza o forse rivelarci qualcosa che prima era nascosto. Questo è probabilmente il motivo per cui così tante persone tengono un diario. Ma se stò attraversando un momento difficile non vorrei solo scrivere su di esso. Mi piacerebbe rivolgermi a qualcuno per un aiuto.
Q: The Loft e The Flash entrambi usciranno quest'anno. Puoi parlarci un po' del film e della serie tv? qualcosa circa i ruoli che interpreti?
"The Loft" è un thriller su cinque amici che finiscono nei guai quando iniziano a tradire le loro mogli. Io interpreto uno dei cinque e ho segreti da nascondere. D: Sei stato abbastanza tranquillo sul fronte recitazione da Prison Break. Perché?
Per un po' di tempo si trattava di scrivere sceneggiature. Attività che aveva tutta la mia attenzione. E mi è piaciuto lavorare in quel modo. Ma ora sto cercando di fare entrambe le cose. C'è un sacco di tempi di attesa sul set, quindi la possibilità di lavorare su uno script di nuovo nella mia roulotte tra una ripresa e l'altra è attraente.
Q: Prison Break è stato un grandissimo successo in Malesia. Com'è stato essere parte di una serie che ha avuto tale riscontro in tutto il mondo?
Mi sono divertito. Mi è piaciuto molto essere parte di qualcosa che ha raggiunto un vasto pubblico. E quando stavamo lavorando nello show eravamo tutti molto consapevoli - e grati – di avere questa significativa base di fan internazionale. Ci ha aiutato a mantenerci ispirati.
D: Come ti sei sentito quando la serie si è conclusa?
Personalmente stavo bene. Ero pronto a dire addio. Penso che siamo stati in grado di raccontare la storia nel modo in cui meritava di essere raccontata e abbiamo avuto modo di concluderla in modo soddisfacente. Capita che spettacoli televisivi vengono cancellati nel mezzo della storia, e per tutto il tempo, i fan vengono lasciati appesi. Nessuno dovrà chiedersi cosa ne è stato di Michael e Lincoln.
D: Hai alcune apparizioni piuttosto memorabili. Una delle quali è stata il video musicale di Mariah Carey “We Belong Together” e un episodio in “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”. Cosa pensi quando li rivedi ora?
Non li ho rivisti da anni. È stato molto tempo fa. Sai a essere onesti, in questi giorni non mi soffermo troppo sul passato. O sul futuro. Il presente è molto più interessante. Sono grato per i lavori che ho avuto, ma io non spendo molto tempo a pensarci. Recentemente, ho incontrato questo ragazzo, lui è un grande fan di "Prison Break" e aveva tutte queste domande su un certo punto della trama della seconda stagione. Io ho avuto solo un vago ricordo di che cosa stava parlando. Per lui era totalmente fresco perché aveva appena assistito allo spettacolo in DVD o qualsiasi altra cosa. Ma per me è stato come, "Abbiamo girato quella roba otto anni fa." Io non ricordo nemmeno il secondo nome del mio personaggio. O se ne aveva uno.
D: Lei è uscito allo scoperto con un atto di protesta contro il governo russo. Ti vedi diventare un attivista per la comunità?
Sono uscito allo scoperto per aiutare a richiamare l'attenzione su ciò che stava accadendo alla comunità gay in Russia, ma anche perché ero pronto. "Nel mio tempo. A modo mio." Questo è uno dei miei motti personali. Dovremmo tutti avere la libertà di muoverci, di crescere e svilupparci a nostro piacimento. Si dà il caso che, quando è arrivato l'invito ad andare in Russia, ero a un punto nella mia vita in cui ero pronto a fare una dichiarazione pubblica. Era il momento giusto.
